Where it all began.
Our Story
My name is Kerry and the creative behind le petit moineau. In 2010 our third child, Emily, was stillborn at 36 weeks. This life changing event was to reshape our family and my journey, not only as a mother but also as a learner and educator. I resigned my teaching position and decided to begin a new path. I turned to my love of paper and stationery. I started creating cards and began a small business, le petit moineau, to honour our little sparrow we had lost. I found some solace in my grief. It became my hope. My healing place. My safe place.
In 2012 I attended my first Calligraphy workshop and I knew in that instant when I dipped the nib into the ink and I drew my first letter that this was a new found passion. The spark was lit. Since then through this amazing community I have had the privilege of teaching this beautiful skill to inspire others on their own creative journey. For me Calligraphy is a form of communication, an interpretation of your own handwriting, which is unique to all of us. It’s a part of who you are, our intimate self. To immerse myself in such a visually rich and creative world has expanded my knowledge and thought around my own creativeness as my interpretation of calligraphy grows. What I have learned these past few years is that le petit moineau is a celebration of our family and my journey in everyday life as well and the exploration as a creative.
Ever Evolving
Written words strengthen our connection to each other and to our place in humanity. To immerse myself in such a visually rich and creative world has expanded my knowledge and thought around my own creativeness as my interpretation of calligraphy grows. My love of life long learning has me visiting museums with different eyes and making notes of the details. In the smallest details lies the allure of colour pallets or texture. My greatest learnings come from the experimentation of inks, mediums and pigments. Hand in hand is the manipulation of beautiful paper on which to apply the many inks and watercolours. Oh what joy it is to see the feathering of ink over the paper and their interaction with each other.
“We are born makers.
We move what we’re learning
from our heads
to our hearts
through our hands.”
